Tutu Puoane walked around with the collection of poetry In A Ribbon Of Rhythm by her South African compatriot Lebogang Mashile for just under a decade. The poems made a deep impression on her, and every time she read them, she heard music.
Based on her favorites, she wrote a bunch of new songs, together with her partner-in-life-and-in-music, pianist Ewout Pierreux. The result is the new album Wrapped In Rhythm.
Wrapped In Rhythm will be released in Spring 2024 and was produced by legendary American musician/producer Larry Klein (Joni Mitchell, Tracy Chapman, Thomas Dybdahl, Herbie Hancock, ...).
It is a glowing repertoire at Tutu's own African intersection of singer-songwriting, jazz and soul. The open and loose structures allow for a very free, improvised and communicative approach. Those who have already experienced her on stage know that this is the ideal context for Puoane at her best.
