De Beren Gieren

For the postmodern jazz trio De Beren Gieren, minimalism and explosive energy remain key ingredients that define their interaction. It is perhaps no coincidence that this trio is based in Belgium, the birthplace of surrealism and techno music. The trio unites three musicians who are very active in the European music scene, but it is within this band that their versatility flows freely. Their music is layered, improvised and visionary, full of whimsy and unpredictable twists and turns, always looking for uncharted territory to explore.

Looking for references? How about Visible Cloaks, Radiohead, Erik Satie and Jon Hassell? In March 2024, De Beren Gieren released their seventh full-length album What Eludes Us via Sdban Ultra to several four-star reviews throughout the Benelux.

Line-up: Fulco Ottervanger (piano, fx, synths), Lieven Van Pée (double bass, el. bass), Simon Segers (drums, fx)

Julien Tassin Quartet

Sometimes we hold high hopes and great expectations, but life has unforeseen twists and turns. That's what guitarist Julien Tassin explores on Great Expectations. Originally, American trumpeter Ron Miles was supposed to join his trio for a concert in Bozar, but unfortunately Miles died unexpectedly. Despite this great loss, Tassin continued to write music for the project. In the meantime, American trumpeter Jason Palmer joined the band. Expect a fresh and vibrant sound full of endless creativity.

The tragic circumstances led to an album where most of the tracks are composed in different parts, each with its own mood and atmosphere. The surprising twists in the music fit the overarching theme while maintaining cinematic overtones. The result is an exciting combination of blues, jazz and rock. The album was released in November 2023 on W.E.R.F. & Igloo.

Live lineup: Julien Tassin (guitar) and his trusted rhythm section - Nicolas Thys (bass), Dré Pallemaerts (drums) and with American-Eritrean Hermon Mehari (trumpet)
