Where to start. By thoroughly internalizing the indestructible discography of post-hardcore band Fugazi and then forgetting about them. Because The Messthetics is indeed a band in its own right. Bassist Joe Lally and drummer Brendan Canty formed this successful offshoot with guitarist Anthony Pirog in 2016, followed by two solid punk jazz albums. Now, blistering jazz saxophonist James Brandon Lewis joins the band as a full member. They thus present their first album, out in March '24 on the legendary jazz label Impulse! Records.

Judging by the Messthetics' enthusiastic audience response and their esteemed guest, listeners are eager to hear what happens when brilliant players like these challenge themselves through new collaborations.

Every time I played with them, there was a vibe and it was a good chemistry,” Lewis says, looking back on his early appearances with the group, which eventually led to a one-off studio track that appeared on the saxophonist’s 2023 LP Eye of I. “They hit me up and they're like, ‘Yo, man, would you want to record a full record?’ And I was like, ‘Yeah, sure,’ because the vibe was so natural.
