The Macondo Trio presents a distinctive blend of modal and improvised jazz, drawing inspiration from African rhythms and the musicians’ personal musical backgrounds.
The trio emerged from the collaboration between Beninese drummer Angelo Moustapha and Belgian saxophonist Sylvain Debaisieux, which deepened during residencies in Belgium and Benin. With the arrival of Italian bassist Federico Stocchi, their music gained a solid, organic foundation.
Their debut EP Macondo (2022, Off Records) was followed by the album Morayò (2025, Challenge Records), which was enthusiastically received at the release concerts in Wallonia and Brussels. On the JazzLab tour, the trio is joined by pianist Wajdi Riahi; for some concerts, Bram De Looze takes on that role, each time bringing his own timbre and approach.
