The all-female ensemble Children of Simone approaches Nina Simone’s body of work as a living repertoire. Led by Emee, seven singers present a multi-layered interpretation of Simone’s work, highlighting her musical and social duality: classical child prodigy and jazz icon, anger and hope, vulnerability and struggle.
The group does not draw on a conventional ‘greatest hits’ approach, but rather from Simone’s extensive catalogue of 44 albums. Well-known tracks such as ‘I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel to Be Free’ and ‘Strange Fruit’ sit alongside lesser-known compositions, which, together with spoken word interludes, bring Simone back to life as a multi-faceted person and musician.
