Groovy ’90s hip-hop with a raw dance beat

With their infectious mix of hip-hop, funk, soul, dance, and electronic music, the Stereo MC’s became one of the most recognizable British acts of the ’90s. The group, led by frontman Rob Birch and producer Nick Hallam, formed in Brighton and achieved international success with a sound that was at once underground, danceable, and sexy: raw beats, funky grooves, samples, and Birch’s distinctive, half-spoken, half-rapped vocals.

Their big breakthrough came with *Connected* (1992), an album that decisively broke down the boundaries between hip-hop, club music, and alternative pop. The title track “Connected” became a worldwide hit and went on to become a classic. Songs like “Step It Up,” “Creation,” “ “Deep Down and Dirty,” “Elevate My Mind,” and “Ground Level” helped define the sound of an era in which hip-hop and electronic dance music were increasingly making their way into the mainstream.

The Stereo MC’s were never just another dance act. Their music always revolved around groove, attitude, and a distinct sense of rhythm. Live, this translated into energetic shows where hip-hop, funk, and club culture blended seamlessly. All those years, they kept performing frequently, with remarkable success. It’s been more than 20 years since they last played in Ghent . Don’t expect a relic from the past—relive the legend!

Stereo MC’s live—get yourself connected: old-school roots, a timeless groove, and, above all, a huge desire to dance.
