“New York’s most unpredictable improviser” City Arts
“one of the most original jazz guitarists of our time” Bandcamp Daily
“one of today’s most impressive bandleaders” Village Voice
Mary Halvorson is renowned both within and beyond jazz circles for her authentic and original approach to the guitar. Rather than merely displaying virtuosic speed, Halvorson moves audiences with her emotional expressiveness. With Canis Major, she presents a brand-new quartet and an entirely new repertoire.
Halvorson is known for her unpredictable playing, complex structures and sharp interaction. She brings together four strong individual voices in a transparent, fluid ensemble.
The music balances between structured forms and open improvisation, with a focus on sound, timing and collective dynamics. Canis Major builds on Halvorson’s recent work, but displays a different, more compact band aesthetic.
