If the group becomes too large (maximum of 18 people), the core group makes a selection with an eye toward a balanced mix of instruments.

Ha Concerts supports children and young people in their music development. To this end, we support music workshops and series such as this one.

Summer camp for girls around free music and improvisation - in Dutch

Would you like to explore free music and improvisation in a playful atmosphere? Are you keen to make new friends and play and create music together? Jazz Camp for Girls is a shared journey of discovery towards finding our musical voice.

Professional coaches (including Louise van den Heuvel and Anthe Huybrechts) will guide you into the world of free play, improvisation, jazz, creation and listening. A core group of young female instrumentalists helps shape the course from start to finish.

Who? For girls between the ages of 10 and 14 who play or want to discover an instrument (birth years 2016 to 2012)
Location? Ha Concerts, Kouter 29, 9000 Gent
Accident insurance is included in the entry fee. Participants bring their own packed lunch.

In brief

Jazz Camp for Girls is an approachable summer internship for girls* ages 10 through 14. They can participate with or without music experience, the commitment is to experiment freely and playfully with an instrument.

Why the focus on girls?

The concept of the Jazz Camp for Girls originated in Denmark, where young girls have been introduced to jazz and its instruments for ten years. The goal is to improve the gender balance in the music industry.

While there has been a growing focus on gender inclusivity in recent years, festivals still program mostly male artists, as SheSaidSo's 2019 research confirms. In the recent report Be the Change: Women Making Music 2021, female music makers report feeling discriminated against, underrepresented, and facing (unconscious) bias. The Jazz Camp for Girls is a positive action to change this. We want to create an open and safe environment with female role models and encourage more girls to get on stage.
