For fans of Sun Ra, John Zorn, Han Bennink, Mette Rasmussen
From 10 to 14 December, Amsterdam's Space is the Place will be touring the Netherlands and Belgium with Interlinie #2 – a Belgian-Dutch cross-pollination full of improvisation, experimentation and jazz. This evening, Space, in collaboration with Ha, will present two releases on the New York label Relative Pitch.
Berlinde Deman (Flat Earth Society Orchestra, Dave Douglas, Dez Mona) moves effortlessly between jazz, contemporary and classical music. Her ongoing search for new soundscapes led her to the serpent, a rare wind instrument from the 16th century – the mysterious predecessor of the tuba.
In her solo programme, Deman blends the deep breath of this ancient instrument with loops and effects. She stretches time, weaves textures and plays with resonance, until a universe unfolds that escapes the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Here, between breath and electricity, between tradition and experiment, a compelling world emerges that feels both familiar and alienating.
#2 Old Adam on Turtle Island
with John Dikeman (sax), Marta Warelis (piano), Aaron Lumley (bass), Sun-Mi Hong (drums)
For Old Man On Turtle Island, American tenor saxophonist John Dikeman wrote new work, a song cycle about colonisation and the dual power of religion – as a source of enlightenment but also oppression. The music switches effortlessly between raw improvisation, cosmic sounds and deep, broken grooves.
The four forces in this line-up are each beloved musicians in the international spotlight – highly recommended to experience this release live.
