In this documentary by award-winning Dutch filmmaker Eline Flipse, you get a glimpse into the influence of Mao's Cultural Revolution on everyday life in China, through the lens of music.
You will meet five Chinese composers—including the now internationally acclaimed composer Tan Dun—who only came into contact with Western classical music, which was labeled anti-revolutionary, in the late 1970s. The film is set in three locations: New York (the “new world”), Paris (old Europe), and China.
During their festival residency at Ha Concerts, award-winning guqin virtuoso Wu Na and saxophonist Jeroen Van Herzeele will explore deeper connections between Chinese and Western music.
Wu Na brings the ancient guqin (a Chinese table zither) into the present, enriching the mystique of the instrument with free improvisations and excursions into other genres. Jeroen Van Herzeele, a versatile jazz saxophonist, masters a broad palette, always driven by a sound that is intimate, spiritual, and instinctive.
