The Zemlinsky Quartet takes its name from a composer from the Viennese multicultural melting pot of the 19th century fin de siècle. His reputation was overshadowed not only by his influential brother-in-law Schoenberg, but also by his older contemporary Mahler. Zemlinsky's four string quartets are wrongly among the lesser-known compositions. These effortlessly hold their own next to famous works by gentlemen whom no one doubts: Dvoøák, Kurtág and Janácek.
