CD Presentation
In 2000, two students decided to participate in the Leuven Interfaculty Song Contest. Before they know it, they win the Nekka competition in 2002 and are standing in front of a filled Sports Palace at Nekka Nacht. Yevgueni is a blessing for Dutch song. The group is compared to Wim De Craene, Boudewijn De Groot and Stef Bos. This music is perfect for the cabaret lover. But they are just as easily placed in rows next to Gorky or De Man. The young audience also adores them.
The light voice of Klaas Delrue sings stories about the small and big questions of everyday life. Sometimes with a touch of irony, but never bitter. The melodies sometimes sound cheerful and fresh, other times subdued and subtle. Whatever the case, every song makes your hair stand on end.
The group released its debut album in 2005 with “Kannibaal”. This includes the beautiful “In this city”, a translation and adaptation of Suzanne Vega's song “In Liverpool”. But the other ten songs also go through the motions in all their disarming simplicity. Whoever puts this record on it turns gray in one go.
In 2007 Yevgueni released his second album. They will present that record at the Handelsbeurs so you can experience this new collection of goosebump moments live. Call it “modern cabaret” or simply call it “art”, Yevgueni is from now on a synonym for beautiful Dutch craftsmanship!
Fact
The impossible group name dates from the group's student period. When Klaas Delrue and Geert Noppe took part in the Leuven Interfaculty Song Contest as a student joke, they decided to distinguish themselves with their group name. With the name “Evguenie Sokolov” - an instrumental song by Serge Gainsbourg - they succeeded with flying colors. With the unexpected success of the group, a simplification of the name was also necessary. And so they stuck with “Yevgueni”.
