This workshop is part of the free play day Here Comes The Sun (6+) during the aHa! Festival.
Want to make music with something you built yourself? In this creative workshop, children aged 8 to 10 will work together with recycled materials. Under the guidance of Brazilian musician and instrument maker Caldeira (Frankli Caldeira), they will build their own instruments, inspired by rhythms, nature and everyday life in Brazil.
Caldeira does not build classical violins, but creates violin-like sounds himself with found objects and sometimes electronics. This results in surprising, experimental soundscapes that stem from a respect for nature and a connection with indigenous culture.
Using unexpected materials, the children discover how sound is created. There is no right or wrong: experimenting, listening and collaborating are central. Each instrument sounds different, and that is precisely what makes it exciting. They return home with their own instrument and a head full of new sounds.
