Artis, Brodsky, Jerusalem, Arcanto, Kopelman, Borodin, ... The list of string quartets that have passed through here several times in recent years is long. Moreover, we have a soft spot for young musicians. It is therefore not surprising that our eyes and ears fell on the Quatuor Ebène this season. A young French string quartet, a product of the Parisian Conservatoire Supérieur, which names itself after the ebony from which the violin and cello fingerboards are made. It won the important ARD competition in Munich in 2004 and has since attracted the interest of major concert houses and prestigious chamber music partners. In 2007 it was one of the chosen ones of the great patron Borletti-Buitoni Trust. Quatuor Ebène recently released Bartók's first three quartets on CD and has opted for the man's very first in this rock-solid program. There is also the Divertimento KV 136 by the sixteen-year-old Mozart, of course in the often played transcription for quartet. Finally, we hear Schubert's famous pièce de résistance 'Der Tod und das Mädchen'. The title of this quartet takes its name from the 2nd movement, which is based on a song that Schubert wrote in 1817 with lyrics by Mathias Claudius.
