Vijay Iyer Trio

As an American pianist with Indian roots, Vijay Iyer is influenced by a broad range of artists, from Thelonius Monk to Michael Jackson. His roots are of great importance as well: “Many of my rhythms and melodies are tributary to Indian music and African music. We create a hybrid musical language.”

Last year, the Chicago Tribune headlined: “There’s no way around it, Vijav Iyer is one of the most original musicians of his generation.” This was confirmed by jazz magazine Downbeat’s yearly polls, which elected him musician of the year. His LP ‘Accelerando’ was the ‘Album of the Year’ and the Vijav Iyer Trio was elected ‘Best Ensemble’. Never before had one musician won in so many categories.
