When John Darnielle started recording with The Mountain Goats in the 1990s, his weapon of choice was a tape recorder. An obvious choice, as the noise and imperfection fit the lo-fi sound of the band perfectly. Over time though, Darnielle has transformed into the perfectionistic studio musician he is today.

Touring relentlessly over the years, the American indie folk band has managed to release no fewer than sixteen albums with permanent bass player Peter Hughes, including ‘The Sunset Tree’, ‘Tallahassee’ and ‘Heretic Pride’. The New Yorker called Darnielle “America’s best non-hip-hop lyricist”.

Darnielle performs his lyrics in his characteristic, somewhat shrill and nasal voice. He’s not averse to the use of baroque language and metaphors. In this way, he transforms every song into a short film, ripe with an atmosphere of past glories and nostalgia. Perfect for a quiet evening of intense listening.
