Something special seems to be brewing on the Scandinavian jazz scene. Hailing from Bergen’s vibrant scene, the sextet Telehiv presents itself with a distinctly unique sound. The group is the new ensemble led by drummer, composer and producer Øyvind Skarbø, known for Skarbø Skulekorps.
Their debut album, Mehmet, marks a clear change of direction: it draws on more acoustic, strong melodies and a wide range of influences, from Brazilian folk music and Afrobeat to minimalism, free jazz and experimental music.
Long forms maintain tension and direction, whilst unusual instrumentation and textures give the whole a sharp, layered quality. Mehmet is dedicated to Skarbø’s late father-in-law and bears a distinctly personal signature. Come and discover it.
