STEVEN DELANNOYE NEW YORK TRIO FEAT. FRANK VAGANÉE

'Uptown Jazz from New York'

In 2009, after his jazz studies at the Lemmeninstituut in Leuven, Steven Delannoye received a grant from the prestigious BAEF (Belgian American Educational Foundation) to study at the famous Manhattan School of Music in New York City. Here, he worked together with pianist Phil Markowitz and many other jazz musicians, and that’s also where he became acquainted with his partners in crime Desmond White and Jesse Simpson.

Since 2010, renowned Belgian jazz musician by way of New York Steven Delannoye has been forming a trio with highly valued acoustic and electric bass player Desmond White and drummer Jesse Simpson. In 2011, Belgian alto saxophonist Frank Vaganée (founder of the Brussels Jazz Orchestra) completed the line-up with his dexterous playing style. With this ensemble, Delannoye has put together a fascinating repertoire consisting of own compositions and classics by Thelonious Monk and Ornette Coleman.

IN THE COUNTRY

In The Country combines a kind of trance jazz with singer-songwriter elements, country with Bookter T grooves and a bear dance with Fender Rhodes, bass and vibraphone. In short: an exceptional musical mélange. One Dutch jazz magazine described their music as “the ghost of Dolly Parton meets the ghost of Morton Feldman, with a hint of Paul Bley and Damien Rice.”

The Norwegian piano trio adapts pop songs by immersing them in jazzy rhythms and arrangements, while also expanding and experimenting with their pop sensibilities. In doing so, they explore new possibilities and produce incredible sonic switches.

The trio sprung from the mind of pianist Morten Qvenild, partner of Susanna Wallumrod in Susanna and the Magical Orchestra, and ex-member of Jaga Jazzist. In their ten years of existence so far, In The Country has received virtually every award within the Norwegian music scene. Their concerts are an immersive experience, guiding you – in typical Norwegian style – through a diversity of musical horizons.
