The young Argentinian cellist Sol Gabetta has created a sensation in recent years with her ravishing but subtle cello playing. Orchestras and soloists are lining up to work with her. Bertrand Chamayou is also a young revelation, who convinces with his well-thought-out approach to romantic and early modern piano music. At this concert, this promising duo explores the diverse facets of cello music in the Romantic era. Beethoven's third sonata is a pioneering work that for the first time gives full scope to the expressive power of the cello. In the variations on a theme from Mozart's Magic Flute we hear how Beethoven commits a bit of parricide. Mendelssohn's second cello sonata, on the other hand, shows the dialogue between the emotionality of Romanticism and the formal language of Bach. But there is also a homegrown surprise: a virtuoso piece by Adrien-François Servais, a Belgian composer who has been unfairly forgotten.
