Laïla Amezian & Les Sheikhs Shikhats

Singer Laila Amezian infuses popular Northern Morocco repertoire with her own musical sauce. For this she surrounds herself with no fewer than seven other singers and five musicians from the jazz and world music scene. Good for refreshing harmony vocals, daring jazz arrangements and a smashing chaabi groove.

What is chaabi?

Chaabi is a popular and traditional urban singing style from Morocco, ideal for dancing at a party. It comes from the rich cultural heritage of the Shikhats; a group of female artists dating back to the end of the 19th century.

Freedom of expression was of paramount importance to them. Their hymns, based on the Aita art (literally call), were used to convey a communal and sometimes even revolutionary message.
