School of Seven Bells
School of Seven Bells was once a mythical academy for pickpockets in South America. Since 2006, it has also been a modern shoegaze band from Brooklyn, which sounds remarkably mainstream. 'Dream pop that is not afraid of a too commercial sound' (fileunder.nl) After touring together as the support act of Interpol, twin sisters Alejandra and Claudia Deheza (On! Air! Library!) united with lucky bastard Benjamin Curtis (Secret Machines) to form SVIIB. In 2008 there was their first album Alpinisms (2008, Humo***). In a summer in which chillwave was omnipresent, Disconnect from Desire came as a welcome change.
In mid-October they shared the news on their Facebook page that Claudia was leaving SVIIB for personal reasons.
Some people will probably call the record detached, and one of its most curious (but frankly awesome) analogues is Madonna's chilly electropop album Ray of Light. I don't want to force the comparison, but like Madonna, SVIIB assimilate niche, underground sounds and set them in a broader pop context. (Pitchfork)
The Tellers strong>
Pure pop from Wallonia. New line up, new record. New hits?
You can place these The Tellers somewhere between the Libertines and the Violent Femmes. The characteristic voice of singer-guitarist Ben Bailleux-Beynon gives the music an extra melancholic tint. He owes his Welsh accent to his mother, who comes from Cardiff. From the EP More (2007), Second Category was chosen for an advertisement for Canon. It became a big hit with 35,000 copies sold. The debut album Hands full of ink also did more than decently: ranked high in the Ultratop. The Tellers is one of the 10 most listened to Belgian artists on Myspace. A tough European tour almost meant the end for The Tellers: only the singer remained. Fabrice Détry (Hello Kosmo, Austin Lace), producer of The Tellers, joined the band. And with Gordon Rafael (The Strokes) they recorded a new album that will be released in September for 62TV Records.
Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly
Brit. Solo. Sam Duckworth. Hit 'Find the Time'.
Long name for a solo artist: Samuel Lloyd Duckworth. His 3rd album of the same name will soon be released, on which we will hear the now familiar mix of indie pop, electronica and acoustic music. Duckworth has Burmese roots, writes mainly socially critical texts and is committed to Oxfam and Fair Trade, among others. On his new single Collapsing Cities he collaborated with drum and bass icon Shy Fx. Find the Time was a big StuBru hit a few years ago.
