The young English violinist Rachel Podger became instantly famous a few years ago with her impressive performance of Bach's sonatas and partitas for solo violin. There was talk of the best 'authentic' recording ever. Together with harpsichordist and fortepiano player Gary Cooper, she is currently recording Mozart's complete sonatas for violin and fortepiano. This often award-winning duo presents a varied Bach program, with both solo and chamber music works. From December 1717 to April 1723, Bach held the position of Kapellmeister at the Calvinist court of Köthen. Most of Bach's chamber music and orchestral works were commissioned by Prince Leopold of Anhalt-Köthen, fond of secular music and himself a player of various instruments. From this, Podger and Cooper chose two sonatas for violin and obbligato harpsichord, three preludes and fugues from 'The Well-Tempered Clavier' and the 'Partita No. 2 for solo violin' with the sublime 'Chaconne' as the icing on the cake.
