Hugo Wolf took years to finish his only string quartet – a moving, almost orchestrally conceived work. The fascination with death had Schubert in its grip as well. He was inspired by the lied of the same name to produce this work. The scale of it, the enormous tension and the intensely dramatic tones show a side of Schubert that is different from the stereotype of the ‘musical miniaturist’.
