The young Navarra String Quartet is bursting with energy, ambition and talent. Bassoonist Bram Van Sambeek is certainly not inferior to them. François Devienne, one of the most important musicians during the French Revolution, mastered the bassoon playing like no other and, as a composer, also knew how to combine it perfectly with other instruments. Du Puy's quintet is just about the most attractive chamber music work for bassoon from the transition period from the classical period to early romanticism. We also hear work by Flemish composer Joris Blanckaert, who consulted the Russian story about the fictional Lieutenant Kijé, a story that also inspired Prokofiev. Claude Debussy's only string quartet needs no garland.
