In an age where the Internet provides access to an unprecedented flood of information, it is not surprising that sampling is experiencing a revival. Video artists Nicolas Provost (1969) and Martin Arnold (1959) transform fragments from Hollywood films until a hallucinatory or hilarious alienation occurs. The repetition, delay and acceleration that Arnold applies to the image is performed purely acoustically by composer Bernhard Lang in his Differenz/Wiederholung 1. Three other composers digitally sample the music played on stage. Next to each instrumental performer, Stefan Prins places a second one who samples his partner with a joystick and virtually doubles them. Sanchez-Chiong also includes the turntable, the hip-hop instrument that made sampling common practice. Finally, the 'Aktionskunstler' Johannes Kreidler wins the German copyright association with a 33-second composition, made up of samples from more than 70,000 copyrighted works. All works together demonstrate the passion for contemporary music of Nadar, a very young collective of top Flemish musicians.
