MONSTER MAGNET

Even though Josh Homme and Monster Magnet frontman Dave Wyndorf declared the stoner rock genre dead in 2002, the band is one of the founders together with Kyuss of the genre. Monster Magnet emerged in 1989 from an experimental noise band Dog of Mystery. Their sound is heavily influenced by '70s space rock and heavy metal. Until 1995, when Wyndorf was kicking drugs and alcohol, the term 'drug rock' was associated with their music.

The band released a total of seven albums, of which only one was a major commercial success: Powertrip 1992, with monster hit 'Space Lord'. But more importantly: the number of albums that gave them cult status is greater. Their first full album, Spine of God (1992), was a hit. A bumpy path followed, through several record companies, group members quitting (Wyndorf is the only original MM member today), and a (non-fatal) overdose. Their eighth full album, Mastermind, will be released in October. Dave Wyndorf writes about this: “It's a big, beefy ball of demented anthems and power rock. The music itself is exaggerated and muscular. Like classic rock gone insane! Giant hooks, giant sounds. The rockers are direct and intense. The ballads, trippy and strange. It's guitar heaven. (…) The lyrics are like a fever dream of life in the 21st century. Cynicism, optimism, satire, sex, deluded fantasies and dead-on reality. They're all here, sometimes even in the same song!”

Seventh Void was founded in 2003 during the recording of Type O Negative's penultimate album: Live Is Killing Me. Kenny Hickey and Johnny Kelly removed the goth influence that is typical of Type O Negative, and have much more stoner and doom influences. In between recordings and tours of Type O Negative, they worked on their debut album Heaven Is Gone, which was released in April 2009. The tour follows the death of Type O Negative frontman Peter Steele in April this year. Hickey and Kelly decided to tackle Seventh Void more seriously.
