Meta4

In December 2006, the young string quartet Meta4 made a notable entrance at the Handelsbeurs. Their much appreciated contemporary classical program was a wonderful tribute to the outgoing mayor of Ghent, Frank Beke. Almost a year later they return to our stage to let the general public enjoy their fresh style, through a very 'Scandinavian' program.

We mainly know the Swedish Wilhelm Stenhammer as one of the greatest Swedish pianists of his time. As a composer, his most important achievement was a series of six quartets, which some consider the most important between Brahms and Bartok. Meta4 plays the fifth, of which Tor Aulin, founder of the quartet of the same name, said: whoever writes this has Haydn's quartets on his bedside table. Neither the Norwegian Grieg, nor the Finn Sibelius, nor perhaps their only quartets – Sibelius's is expressly called 'Voces Intimae' – need to be presented in detail. There are no more suitable performers for these works from the cold North than the four young Finns of Meta4.
