Mari Boine

Mari Boine's voice sounds like the thin, cold air in Lapland. Her music is like a sleigh ride across the vast snow plains. Mari Boine is a Sami. She was born in northern Norway. She sings about the pain of oppression and the struggle for self-respect of her people, but also about the joy of growing up in a culture that is so close to nature.

Mari Boine may work under a jazz label, but her music falls outside any genre. It is a flow of floating sound waves on dreamy electronic beats, a sound that blurs the boundaries of time. A critic wrote about her latest CD: “It is as though Mari Boine's voice reveals just the smallest slice of eternity”. The music can be compared to that ofLaurie Anderson. Sit back and let the intense and intimate world of the Sami blow through you.
