4 musical journeys in 1 night
'1 2 3 4' is a collaboration between 3 internationally recognized organizations and 3 brilliant artists
from Belgium, Portugal and Slovenia. Aubergine Artist Management (BE), Clean Feed Records (PT) and Druga Godba (SI) bring together their quality label in order to support 3 of the most promising jazz talents.
For this special night, we propose 4 sets:
1 Kaja Draksler solo
2 Kaja Draksler and Susana Santos Silva duo
3 De Beren Gieren trio
4 De Beren Gieren and Susana Santos Silva quartet
WHO'S WHO?
Kaja Draksler is a Slovenian pianist and composer, currently residing in Amsterdam. She just released her first solo album The lives of many others on Cleanfeed records, which is very well received. Kaja Draksler is the leader of Acropolis Quintet (active since 2006) and the cofounder of BadBooshBand (2009). Draksler’s experience with large number formations (European Movement Jazz Orchestra, her own Katarchestra, Slovenian Philharmony Orchestra and others) has translated her playing into a vision of the piano as a miniature orchestra.
“The young Slovenian pianist Kaja Draksler pulls together information from a century of experimental music and jazz. She also makes rhythm a priority, and reminds you subtly that she knows what she’s doing. [...] It’s hard, or maybe impossible, to predict where she’s going to take you. That’s not so common from a young musician.” New York Times
Susana Santos Silva is a Portuguese trumpet player, improviser and composer based in Porto. She has her own Quintet called SSS5tet with whom she recorded her first album as leader Devil´s Dress, released in 2011 on Lisbon based label TOAP Records. She is also part of Rotterdam based trio LAMA with Gonçalo Almeida on bass and electronics and Greg Smith on drums. Other projects include amongst others a duo with Swedish bassist Törbjörn Zetterberg and a duo with Portuguese drummer Jorge Queijo. Moreover, she is also part of the Orchestra Jazz de Matosinhos and the European Movement Jazz Orchestra.
"Santos Silva is a master of tonal nuances, coaxing an astounding array of colors and textures from her horn, creating call-and-response effects via rapid alteration of open and muted sounds, weaving cohesive narratives without obvious melodies…” NYC Jazz Record
In the space between expectation and surprise, you will find De Beren Gieren, providing robust evidence that gold can still be mined from the union of piano, bass and drums. They released their third album A Raveling in October 2013 which received very enthusiastic reviews and was stated in the NYC Jazz record magazine as one of the “Best new release of 2013”.
Besides their trio, De Beren Gieren enjoy engaging in collaborations with other interesting musicians from different countries. They played with Louis Sclavis, Jan Klare, Jean-Yves Évrard, Hasse Poulsen, Joachim Badenhorst and Ernst Reijseger. They are now pursuing their collaboration with Susanna Santos Silva and in December they will be collaborating with new music collective Oerknal! from the Netherlands.
