Joel Frederiksen & Ensemble Phoenix Munich: Fire Passion in English Lute Songs

''FIRE - PASSION IN ENGLISH LUTE SONG AND MASQUES''

The famous American bass and lute player Joel Frederiksen is the reference in the field of English lute songs. His Ensemble Phoenix Munich also includes the Belgian soprano Elise Caluwaerts. Together they present a program around passion and fire. In the 17th century, composers of love songs often used fire to express the emotions of love in poetry. This period, which began under Elizabeth I, is known as the Golden Age of Lute Song. It is a particularly dynamic chapter in music history and in the development of the lute song. The lute was the king of the instruments and opera gradually took on a face. The program begins and ends with a work on Thomas Campion's text 'Fire, fire'. Campion was the embodiment of the English Renaissance man: poet, composer, theorist and doctor. His songs are often simple and deeply moving.
