Jian Wang (Cello)

Following their recording of Brahms' piano trios, Gramophone wrote: “the duo of Augustin Dumay and Mario Joao Pires have found themselves a true soul mate”. This like-minded chamber music partner is the Chinese cellist Jian Wang. He received his first cello lessons from his father and was admitted to the Shanghai Conservatory at the age of ten. His talent was recognized by the world-famous violin teacher Isaac Stern. Under his influence, Jian Wang left for the US at the age of sixteen for thorough cello training. He is now being asked as a soloist by all world orchestras. Wang excels with his stunning technique and rich sound, but is also distinguished by his pursuit of sincere music making: he never seeks great sentiment at the expense of his own feelings. When Wang becomes satiated after performing countless concertos, he plays Bach's cello suites to regain a pure musical spirit.
