With 'Metamorphosen', a piece for clarinet, horn, cello and percussion, Jelle Tassyns became a laureate of the East Flemish culture prize in 2005. Following this victory, the provincial government gave him a composition assignment. At the invitation of the Handelsbeurs, Tassyns now presents his composition, 'concerto for violin and chamber ensemble'. Despite the classical three-movement form, this is not a concerto in the strict sense. Tassyns surrounds the violin with wind instruments, an unusual line-up that creates intense tension and is the leitmotif throughout the entire composition. He fuses old and new forms into a contemporary work in which the historical context is manifestly present. Tassyns' work will be performed tonight by soloist and violinist Wibert Aerts and the ensemble “Group C”, led by conductor Geert Baetens. Wibert Aerts is no stranger to the Handelsbeurs. As a godson, he is guided by the Ha' on his way to the artistic top. Just like Jelle Tassyns, he has an impressive curriculum that makes him more than worthy of the label of a particularly gifted musician. “Group C” was created when several soloists from the Flemish Harmony Orchestra decided to perform together. The reason for forming this ensemble was the creation of the Chamber Symphony n°1 – Contrafacta, by Tassyns. The 'C' in the name refers to this piece. Jelle Tassyns' staves are clearly in good hands.
