INWOLVES (LP RELEASE)
There are those who confirm and those who continually change and confront. Karen Willems clearly belongs to the latter category. With Inwolves, she further develops the promise of Air + (2014), evolving into a subsequent phase. Music that suits dark and desperate times.
You may know Willems as the former drummer for Yuko, Zita Swoon Group, Dirk Serries and Cycle, and a variety of disparate projects. She has teamed up with Jürgen De Blonde (synths) and Ward Dupan (guitar) to create Inwolves, mining an intensity that remained just under the surface in her previous release.
Rooted in the experimental German rock of the Seventies, but also kin to the contemporary recycling of analog electronic rock and dynamic sound painting, their music lives in a universe that sounds as ominous as it does energetic. Light and dark, rhythm and texture, silence and movement come together.
The suitelike coherence of the compact album enhances Willems’ courageous vision. It stays true to its constantly changing nature and the organic blending of ideas, but also guarantees a fluid movement between semi-industrial chaos, cinematic vistas and intimacy. Inwolves is the next step in a world of endless possibilities.
THE GERMANS 'GOT TALENT'
The Germans are synonymous with heavily experimental pop and noise. After 11 festival-filled years and four acclaimed LPs, it's time for something different: an explosive show in which they call upon several show-stopping guests to join them in making their whimsically psychedelic sound.
In 2004 the five lads from Ghent made it to the semifinals in Humo's Rock Rally. Four years later they scored big with their first LP, Elf Shot Lame Witch. It was followed by Grote Meneren/Straffe madammen, which came out in 2009, and the 'somewhat more accessible' Mother Sings In Front Of The House (2014). Last year they extended the lineup with Are Animals Different. Improvisation is never far away when these unconventional scoundrels play live. Unorthodox, idiosyncratic and always good for a psychedelic trip!
From Eurosonic in Groningen's report:
"The highlight of the show is the dancer who suddenly emerges from the audience looking like Gaslamp Killer meets Catweazle, in his retro graffiti-covered shoes and pants. Redbeard tears off his wig and shirt, leaving him in only latex trousers with fishnet pantyhose. [...] A bizarre krautrock/psychedelic trip. A real pleasure."
