Hugo Wolf Quartett (strijkkwartet)

LA VITA – LA NATURA – LA MORTE

The Hugo Wolf Quartett presents an original program with early quartets by Beethoven and Webern balanced with the last quartet by Mendelssohn, that he composed after the death of his sister and two months before his own death. Beethoven's Opus 18 No. 1 is the most grand, brilliant and emotional of the series of six and has always been the audience's favourite. Webern, for his part, wrote a string quartet as a student of musicology that is still completely bathed in the language of high romanticism: un-Webernian, without opus number, but intensely evocative. We end with Mendelssohn, the so-called carefree child of the gods, but that cliché melts like snow in the sun in his sixth quartet, in which he shows fear and anger.
