Ha'fest: Liesa Van der Aa & 42 voices: The Hall (creatie)

Handelsbeurs asked the multitalented Liesa Van der Aa to write new work to premiere at Ha’fest. The result is a piece for 42 voices, which will be presented in St. James' Church. In the opening act, the dark realms of Inwolves will fill the almost sacred surroundings.

LIESA VAN DER AA & 42 VOICES: THE HALL (CREATION)

Liesa Van der Aa is definitely a musical centipede, as evidenced once again by her new work for 42 voices: The Hall.

She got the idea for a 42-voice choir from her fascination with the use of very sophisticated polyphony in the Renaissance. For example, Spem in Alium, the masterful 16th century 40-voice work of English composer Thomas Tallis stills sounds both mythical and contemporary. At the same time, it fits in with a new production which Liesa Van der Aa is currently working on: The Weighing or the Heart.

The Weighing or the Heart refers to the Egyptian mythology in which the heart of the departed is weighed in the “Hall of Two Truths”. There, in consultation with 42 judges, the god Osiris decides who will go to which afterlife.

Liesa Van der Aa brings her work to St. James' Church, traditionally a Hall of Two Truths. It is a mythical sacred place with wonderful acoustics where the monumental songs of the 42-strong Waancel Podium choir and Liesa Van der Aa will move you.

The choir will be led by Peter Spaepen, who has already collaborated with Liesa for Troops and is now also co-writing the music. The hymns range from Carmina Burana-like passages to mysterious whispers. A concert bound to stay with you into the hereafter.

INWOLVES

Inwolves is de nieuwe band van Karen Willems (Yuko, Zita Swoon Group), Jürgen De Blonde (de Portables, Kohn) en Ward Dupan (Low Vertical). Bij Inwolves draait alles rond sfeer. Donkere synths botsen met Karens eigenzinnige drumstijl en worden overgoten met prachtige melodieën.

Inwolves klinkt donker maar er schijnt steeds een straal licht uit de duisternis. Als een soundtrack voor een niet-bestaande David Lynch film.

"Het trio, met naast Karen Willems ook nog Ward Dupan en Jürgen De Blonde, liet onlangs een sterke indruk na in de 4AD met een set die drie kwartier lang wist te boeien met regelmatig slechts een minimum aan ideeën." (Lees de volledige cd-recensie op enola.be)

"Inwolves omschrijven als een zijproject zou de nieuwe groep van drumster/percussioniste Karen Willems onrecht aandoen. Daarvoor is deze 10'' te creatief en te authentiek. "Los van de gebruikte percussietuigen, wordt deze kortspeler (speelduur: 26 minuten) nu gedomineerd door donkere, gelaagde elektronica.
