Foyer Matinee: Philippe Thuriot (Accordeon)

The final concert in the Foyer Matinee series looks very promising. The program includes Bach’s Goldberg Variations in a splendid rendition by accordionist Philippe Thuriot.

Generally, Johann Sebastian Bach’s Goldberg Variations are considered one of the most important keyboard works of the eighteenth century. Goldberg was a pupil of Bach and ward of Count Keyserlingk. The count suffered from insomnia and ordered the aria with variations to spend his sleepless hours in a meaningful way. Concealed behind a curtain in the count’s chambers, Goldberg would play them on a harpsichord. Passion, joy, happiness, melancholy, sorrow, loneliness … for every emotion Bach wrote a fitting variation.

This time you won’t hear the Goldberg Variations played on a harpsichord or piano. Performing the piece instead on the accordion, Philippe Thuriot takes it to a new level.
