A DELICATE SONIC PLAY

“I am working on a new great Symphony,” an enthusiastic Franz reported to his friends from Bad Gastein in 1824. However, since no such score has survived from that period, it is sometimes assumed that the Gastein symphony in question has been sadly lost. Only a preliminary stage would have remained, namely the Octet in F. Schubert's largest-scale chamber music piece (for string quartet, double bass, clarinet, horn and bassoon) and indeed often has a stunningly symphonic feel. With its six movements it is good for an hour full of song-like melodies, dancing rhythms, warm harmonies and enchanting color combinations. The Edding Quartet & wind friends also perform this work on historical instruments, which makes the delicate sound and color play even more intense. The darkly expressive Quartettsatz can compete with the Octet for the title of Schubert's most neglected masterpiece.
