After his role as Doctor Faust in a performance of Ferruccio Busoni's opera of the same name in 1997, the international career of baritone Dietrich Henschel took off. This success took him to all major opera houses and festivals. However, his greatest love goes out to Song. Henschel's preference for emotionally charged songs is noticeable in this program. With Schumann we find ourselves in the restless heyday of romanticism. The composer himself describes the 'Liederkreis' opus 39 as his most romantic music ever. The work is based on texts by Joseph von Eichendorff, in which nature is central and a broad spectrum of human emotions is depicted. 'Dichterliebe opus 48' is a cycle of 16 songs with texts by Heinrich Heine. This cycle takes the song to a higher level of evolution: the piano becomes an equal partner of the singer, but also functions as a counterweight.
