GRAY CELLS: DOPING OF THE NEXT GENERATION
Excellent scientists on designer drugs, gene doping and brain pills
Not a cycling season goes by without at least one doping riot is discussed. Reason for deBuren, Eos and FWO to enter into a debate at the Handelsbeurs about the latest developments in drug use: designer drugs, gene doping and brain pills. Reinout Verbeke (Eos) speaks with toxicologist Prof. Jan Tytgat(KULeuven) andProf. Peter Van Eeno(UGent) about how the drugs are made, what the effects and dangers are and whether we should not gradually change our concept of the 'best' into that of the 'best doped'?
Prof. Peter Van Eenoois head of the doping control laboratory at Ghent University, one of the 33 laboratories of the World Anti-Doping Agency. In addition to the analysis of routine samples from athletes, new detection methods are also developed in the lab and the metabolism of new dopants is investigated.
Prof. Jan Tytgat is professor of toxicology at KU Leuven and head of the toxicology and food chemistry lab. He conducts drug expertise for the Ministry of Justice. He is an excellent communicator and therefore a sought-after expert in the written press, on radio and TV.
