CAGE AND SCARLATTI: CLASHING AND RESOUNDING SOUND WORLDS

Two composers from different periods, two musicians on different instruments: a prepared piano and a 17th-century harpsichord. Or are the worlds of Cage and Scarlatti more closely related than one would think?

Daan Vandewalle and Keiko Shichijo let you discover for yourself by interspersing Cage’s Sonatas & Interludes with aptly chosen sonatas by Scarlatti. As one of the most important works of the 20th century, Sonatas & Interludes showaces unprecedented control as Cage draws a wealth of sonorities from a sabotaged piano sabotaged. Shichijo and Vandewalle present us with a selection from Scarlatti’s oeuvre that serves as a suitable rejoinder to their young bastard cousin.
