Cuarteto Casals (strijkkwartet)

THREE GENERATIONS OF STRING QUARTET COMPOSERS

Since the turn of the century new string quartets have been popping up like mushrooms. One of these is the Spanish Cuarteto Casals that continues to pile up praise and prizes year after year. They will perform work by three generations of string quartet composers. Haydn’s opus 20 was in the vanguard of the typical string quartet adventure that set the tone of Western music for 200 years. Schubert used tender, sweet tones that flow naturally, even though he considered them ‘finger exercises’. Shostakovich’s fourth is a ‘classic’ quartets, with very beautiful moments along the lines of works by Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven.
