When the Handelsbeurs brings jazz into its home, it does so with conviction. Courtney Pine has been involved in the international jazz scene for more than twenty years. In the 1980s, Courtney Pine's impressive playing style was almost identical to that of John Coltrane. It had been proven that he was good.
But the idiosyncratic saxophonist had no intention of staying within the boundaries of jazz. Pine played with reggae and funk bands, collaborated with John Stevens, formed the open-minded big band “The Jazz Warriors” and toured with George Russell's Orchestra. An impressive mix of influences found its way into the music of Courtney Pine: “initially I imitated people like John Coltrane, Coleman Hawkins and Sonny Rollins. But little by little, the music that you grow up with as a black person in London also crept in: ska, reggea and funk.” In fact, Pine did not shy away from immersing, say, drum 'n bass or garage in a contemporary jazz bath. Curious about that unheard sound? Justifiably! On March 9, Courtney Pine will show you all corners of jazz.
