Suffering, melancholy and powerlessness in the face of fate are the central themes in Portuguese fado music. The young singer Cristina Branco continues the long tradition of fado in a new, fresh form. With her beautiful voice and her sensitive interpretation she brings the lyrics and music of fado together. At this concert, Cristina Branco will sing texts by the most important poet, composer and interpreter of Portuguese music of all time: José 'Zeca' Afonso. He was an ardent opponent of colonialism and Apartheid. His song “Grândola Vila Morena” became immortal as one of the symbols of the Carnation Revolution. Cristina Branco brings this special figure back to life in the language he loved most: Portuguese fado.
