THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST
The Chiaroscuro Quartet with first violinist Alina Ibragimova and Beethoven’s opus 95 are a perfect match. Beethoven’s 11th string quartet was entitled ‘Quartett[o] Serioso’, and that he was serious about it is obvious from the main key, F minor, which is often used to portray death, and the tempo indication ‘allegro assai, vivace ma serioso’ above the third movement.
The members of the Chiaroscuro (lit. ‘light and dar’k) Quartet met at the London Royal College of Music and specialise in historically informed performances. This concert is their introduction to the Belgian stage, with a superb programme of music from the first Viennese school;
