Carmens Souza

Carmen Souza grew up in Portugal, but mainly expresses her Cape Verdean roots in her music. Traditional Cape Verdean and African rhythms go hand in hand with contemporary jazz and soul influences. With her warm, agile voice, Carmen Souza effortlessly opens all registers. Guitar and percussion provide the spicy touch like salt and pepper.

Her debut album was released in 2003. It was Theo Pas'cal, one of Portugal's best bassists, who discovered Souza and would continue to guide her as a mentor. In 2007 she signed her second album with 'Connecting Cutures/Choice Music' for the worldwide distribution of her music. Since then, Carmen Souza has become the international face of the evolution of Cape Verdean music. Live, Souza swings from song to song with a disarming naturalness and has the audience on her side in no time.
