The flamboyant Swedish trombonist-conductor Christian Lindberg is without a doubt the greatest trombonist of our time. DeFilharmonie was therefore happy to be tempted to send its wind instruments to the Handelsbeurs. Both parties will strengthen each other at this 'extra large' chamber music concert. The first piece on the program is Strauss's second sonatina. One could formulate a pressing question: what reason did a German have to give carefree wind music the title 'Fröhliche Werkstatt' around 1945? We can only argue that Strauss was living in Switzerland when writing this piece of good cheer, modeled on Mozart's 'Gran Partita', where cheerful workshops still existed in 1945. Christian Lindberg also composes himself and takes this opportunity to perform his 'Condor Canyon' and 'Brainrubbish'. Finally, there is Stravinsky's symphony for wind instruments, born from a chorale that the great Russian wrote for Debussy in 1918. Intriguing music that he first composed for harmonium, later for string quartet and finally for 23 wind instruments.
