ROMANTIC QUARTETS WITH SYMPHONIC ALLURE

The press is unanimous: the Artemis Quartet is possibly the best string quartet of our time. After a sensational recording of the Beethoven quartets, the four recently brought out a Schubert collection.

At Handelsbeurs they will be playing Schubert’s last string quartet, a work that is romantic to the core, in which we hear the same death wish and the same lonely spirit as in the lied cycle Winterreise. Written two years after the ‘great’ ninth symphony, it shares the same symphonic dimensions and orchestral sound.

Mendelssohn’s Quartets opus 44 were composed not long after his fourth ‘Italian’ and the fifth ‘Reformation’ symphonies and are striking for their rich lyrical melodies, warm romantic colours, shimmering rhythmic vitality and intense harmonies.
