Anouar Brahem

Anouar Brahem learned classical lute at the conservatory of Tunis from different masters. They introduced him to the classical Magam and the art of improvisation. Exploring both, Brahem connects a variety of musical worlds, creating his own language along the way.

So far, the Tunisian master of the oud (Arabian lute) has released no less than 11 albums on the ECM label. Each project marks a different direction, including collaborations with Jan Garbarek, Dave Holland, John Surman, Barbaros Erköse and Kudsi Erguner. According to Stéphane Olivier, “Brahem strives to intertwine his influences and passions with his own compositions. He is one of the few composers that can be at once topical and rooted in tradition.” At the Handelsbeurs, together with his most recent quartet, he will no doubt treat us to some new compositions. A unique experience!
