Alexei Lubimov

Lubimov turned sixty last year and now has a more than impressive track record as a piano virtuoso and astute musician. His repertoire covers the entire spectrum from baroque to contemporary music. In the 1970s he emerged as a champion of new music (he introduced work by Cage and Riley in Moscow, often featuring Ives, Schoenberg, Webern and Ligeti on his posters, in addition to creations by Schnittke, Gubaidulina and Silvestrov). In the 1980s he focused mainly on performance practice on old instruments. For example, he founded the Moscow Chamber Academy together with Tatjana Grindenko (she will be performing at the Handelsbeurs on September 29). But the repertoire between old and contemporary is also not neglected: he just as enjoys playing Mozart, Schubert or Debussy. After the lifting of his travel ban in 1987, Lubimov was able to start conquering the world - he now travels almost all of Europe and America at the invitation of the most famous orchestras and concert halls. In chamber music, he has top musicians such as Natalia Gutman, Heinrich Schiff, Christian Tetzlaff, Andreas Staier and Peter Schreier as permanent partners. Last season he found a worthy partner in Jos van Immerseel and Anima Aeterna. After his previous Handelsbeurs concert, when he discussed the genre of 'fantasy' through the centuries, he now presents a special program in which old and new are expertly pieced together in performances on historical instruments. Gourmet tasting for enthusiasts.
