“There is no city that gives off so much noise and such a clamor as Naples.” - Elena Ferrante
For this third edition of The City's Song, pianist and composer Thomas Noël plunges into the heart of Naples, a city full of contradictions. Beauty next to noise and chaos next to mysticism. With a richly composed collective of Flemish and Italian artists, he presents a vivid portrait in music and image.
The City’s Song - Napoli Sessions
Thomas Noël (piano, hammond, guitar, electronics, compositie, regie - BE), Emiliano Della Giovanna (drums - IT/BE), Wouter Vandenabeele (viol - BE), Mimmo Maglionico (schalmei, fluiten, zang, compositie - IT), Marta Riccardi (bas - IT) Roberto Trenca (guitars batente, quatro, gitaar - IT), Carmine D'Aniello (zang, drum, percussie - IT), Sammy Van Cauteren (photography/video), Silvio Siciliano (video, archiefbeelden - IT), Firas El Hallak (visuals - LB)
With the help of the Ghent based drummer Emiliano della Giovanna from Naples, Thomas travelled to Italy in search of new sounds, voices and stories. They met Mimmo Maglionico, a master of the Neapolitan shawm, and singer Carmine D'Aniello, who founded a lively music school in the working-class district of Scampia. They were joined by Neapolitan rappers, poets and spoken-word artists. Gradually, a hybrid ensemble emerged, combining traditional elements such as the tarantella with jazz and contemporary grooves.
Visually, Naples also has much to offer - inspiring a multi-layered visual language that combines new video footage and archive material of the city's musical culture. In every way, Napoli Sessions is an ode to the city and its people. Discover their dreams, their struggles, their spirituality and their creations.
